In addition to your child’s classroom teacher, you will get to know a number of people who help make the school run smoothly. Each school is led by an administrative team that consists of the principal and an assistant principal or special education building administrator (SEBA). There is also a full-time nurse in each building as well as a full-time adjustment counselor. Each of these people has a specific role, and here is what you can expect of each:

The Principal ensures a safe and supportive learning environment and supports teachers to be the best educators they can be for our children. The principal shares what is happening within the school and maintains open communication with families. They support the use of restorative practices and oversee discipline in the school. They advocate for the needs of the school to help it run smoothly.

The Assistant Principal or Special Education Building Administrator (SEBA) serves as chairperson for all Special Education Team Meetings. They support the principal in all aspects of school life, including the use of restorative practices and discipline in the school.

The Nurse supports individual student medical needs as required during the school day. The Nurse identifies suspected health problems (e.g., poor vision, hearing, nutrition, and emotional concerns) and contacts parents/guardians about possible health problems and helps them find the proper resources for care. The Nurse notifies the principal and provides instructional material for parents/guardians on what they should do if a child is exposed to a contagious disease and/or condition while at school. 

The Adjustment Counselor is a licensed social worker who supports students in managing their growth and development and any special needs. They work in collaboration with parents/guardians and teachers to help students who are having difficulties with separation anxiety and transitioning to kindergarten. The Adjustment Counselor also supports students in maintaining positive peer relationships. 

Teaching Assistants help teachers with lesson preparation and classroom setup to support student success. They also assist students with special learning requirements and review classroom content with students who need special accommodations or who are struggling with a concept. They also provide additional supervision to students in class, during lunch, recess, and on field trips.
